According to the US Department of Labor, medical office jobs are the fastest-growing occupation through the year 2012. Now is the time to get the right training to launch your career.
What Types of Medical Office Jobs are Out There?
The primary function of medical office personnel is to ensure that the office runs smoothly. Depending on the size of your office, you could be doing a wide range of tasks, such as:
- Greeting patients
- Answering phones
- Filing records
- Billing
- Scheduling
- Bookkeeping
Medical office personnel who work in smaller clinics are typically called "generalists," because they perform a variety of tasks. If you work in a larger clinic or hospital, you will work under the supervision of an administrator and your work will be more specific.
Train for a Medical Office Career
While the bulk of a medical office job is clerical, there are plenty of opportunities to explore more clinical work with patients. In fact, employers much prefer to hire employees with formal training from a medical office or medical assistant program.
You can choose to attend a one-year program and receive your certificate. There are also two-year programs, which will earn you an associate's degree. Topics cover administration subjects such as typing, transcription, and insurance processing. You will also learn the basic principles of anatomy, medical terminology and physiology.
Because a medical office job is so people-oriented, it's important that you get practical training to supplement your classroom work. Choose a program that offers you real experience and help with placement.
Once you have been trained, you'll be in great position to take advantage of the huge demand for medical office personnel.
