A recent report by the American Hospital Association found that 126,000 nurses are needed to fill vacancies at our nation's hospitals. Today, fully 75% of all hospital vacancies are for nurses. What careers await you upon completing a registered nursing program?

With a degree from a nursing program you can find yourself working in both hospitals and clinics. If you're looking for a little more excitement, though, there are other opportunities to explore if you enter a forensic nursing program instead of (or in addition to) a registered nursing program.

Choose Your Nursing Program

With a degree from a forensic nursing program you can find yourself in a career that has captured the imagination of television audiences. One of many forensic nursing jobs that you can pursue is crime scene investigation.

Crime scene investigation is slow paced, tedious and tiresome work. While crime scene investigation lacks the rush nurses can get from emergency room and hospital settings, pursuing criminals is a cat and mouse game that can become highly addictive.

Training Beyond The Nursing Program

Most states give crime scene investigators with arrest powers. To become a crime scene investigator, you'll also need some training in law enforcement in addition to a degree from a forensic nursing program. Check with your local police department to find the specific requirements for your county and state.

Unlike what is depicted on TV, a crime scene investigator's job is very specific. A forensic nursing program will train you to collect evidence that other more highly trained forensic scientists process in sophisticated laboratories. Chances are slim that you'll interrogate criminals or physically catch the bad guy.

Breaking In: Online Nursing Schools and Law Enforcement

If you're interested in combining the challenge of nursing with criminal investigation, a forensic nursing program can prepare you to enter a number of forensic nursing jobs. After all, solving crime does pay.
