You've always thought of yourself as somewhat of a puppet master. Working behind the scenes, driving an operation, but letting others bask in the glory. If you like being out of the spotlight but controlling a lot of money, a medical billing job might be a great fit for you.
Medical Billing Jobs
Medical billing personnel are the people who collect money and keep track of patient payments. In a medical billing job, you will provide critical support to a hospital's administration, while working out of the public's eye.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Bookkeeping
- Coordinating hospital procedures with insurance companies
- Explaining processes to patients
- Scheduling appointments
- Filing records and documents
- Sending bills to patients
If you work in a smaller office, you will be responsible for a wider range of tasks and often have more interpersonal interaction.
Medical Billing Schools
Hospitals and clinics much prefer to fill medical billing jobs with candidates who have gone through formalized training. You can choose to enroll in a medical billing course online and receive your associate's degree or certification in about two years.
In a medical billing course, you will learn:
- Office procedures
- Coding
- Medical terminology
- Medical keyboarding
- Transcription
- Insurance policies
Medical billing jobs require great attention to detail, good mathematical skills, and a solid background in technical components. When choosing a program, be sure to not only find one that will work with your schedule, but one that also provides you with an externship or other placement opportunities.
Getting the right training is the first and most important step in handling all the money that comes in an out of a hospital; and controlling an operation from behind the scenes!
