In fact, according to the National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC), there are approximately 7.6 million people in the U.S. who receive some form of home healthcare due to acute illness, long-term health problems, permanent disability, or terminal illness.
Home Health Care: Where the Jobs Are
Thanks to advances in home-based medical technologies, we can now indulge our natural preference to be nursed back to health at home. Home healthcare has gone from being a relatively small segment of the industry to one of the fastest-growing areas within healthcare--not to mention the general economy. And, with the Baby Boomer generation entering their 60s, the number of Americans who are going to need these kinds of services is expected to increase. This means that many home healthcare jobs will be in plentiful supply.
Types of Home Healthcare Jobs
According to the NAHC, there are many different kinds of home healthcare jobs. In addition to offering professional nursing services, those with home healthcare jobs may also specialize in physical, respiratory, occupational or speech therapy. You may choose to foucs on nutrition, dental care, podiatry, x-ray or even supply services. RNs (registered nurses) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) offer the kinds of services that only professional personnel can provide such as wound care, patient assessments, injections and intravenous therapy. Home health aides help patients with ADLs (activities of daily living) such as walking, bathing, and dressing.
If you're looking for a rewarding career caring for others, in a rapidly expanding industry that offers excellent growth potential, maybe it's time to consider a home healthcare job.
