If you love to work with animals, now is the perfect time to turn your passion into practice with a highly rewarding and specialized career as a veterinary technician. You'll have the opportunity to work side-by-side with licensed veterinarians and become part of a medical team that will diagnosis, treat, and prevent animal diseases and injuries.
The Veterinary Technician
As a vet tech, your role will be to provide professional assistance to veterinarians, biological research workers, and/or animal control or humane organizations. And while your duties will be performed under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, you'll enjoy working directly with both large and small animals, prepping the animals themselves, instruments, equipment, and medication for examinations.
You'll also help apply bandages and splints, feed animals, and maintain proper medical sanitation of animals and their environment. Additionally, you might be asked to help out with office management, record keeping, and patient/owner communications.
Veterinarian Programs
Becoming a veterinary technician involves completion of a two- or three-year degree program, depending upon whether you attend on a full- or part-time basis. Make sure your chosen program is accredited through the American Veterinary Medical Association and offers hands-on preceptorship and externship choices. During your schooling, most of your classes will cover animal behavior, medical, surgical, and critical care, anesthesiology, radiology, and clinical laboratory procedures.
Veterinary Technician Opportunities
Choosing a career in the vet tech field may prove to be difficult. That's because your choices and opportunities are so numerous, you might not even know where to start! Keep in mind that once you've graduated, you may work in private veterinarians' offices, diagnostic and research laboratories, veterinary pharmaceutical and supply businesses, or any other area dealing with animal medical and health care. Your opportunities will truly only be limited by your imagination!
