According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), only about 40% of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to law enforcement in 2003.
Without trained forensic nurses, many sexual assault victims might not seek justice. As our understanding of sexual assault increases, forensic nursing programs have become more popular.
Graduate From A Forensic Nursing Program
The best college nursing programs prepare graduates to fill roles as caregivers, but a graduate from a forensic nursing program is trained to take on roles in emergency and acute care departments, sexual assault examination programs, child and/or adult protective service investigation units, psychiatric forensic treatment and evaluation units, and death investigation teams.
Forensic Courses in College Nursing Programs
When you graduate from a forensic nursing program, you will be educated about all major types of at-risk forensic populations, the signs of sexual and physical abuse, and how to examine and collect evidence that can be used by law enforcement to prosecute the crime. With a degree or diploma in forensic nursing, you can specialize in specific areas such as child abuse and neglect, intimate partner abuse, elder abuse, abuse of the developmentally disabled, sexual assault, or death investigation.
Helping Victims Help Themselves
Forensic nurse training is one way to ensure that victims will find the justice they deserve. There are a number of college, nursing schools, and graduate nursing programs that are designed to help working nurses to get the education and certification they need for this career. As more healthcare facilities become aware of the need for forensic nurses, the demand for forensic nursing graduates will also grow.
