Pressure point therapy is a general category of treatments that includes practices from acupressure to reflexology, all of which are gaining increasing acceptance in the broader health care community.

Acupressure is often used as a treatment for pain, while shiatsu and reflexology are often employed to help restore balance to patients' bodies, to help patients relax, or to address other health problems, ranging from fatigue to circulation problems.

Reflexology Certification

The American Reflexology Certification Board allows you to demonstrate your expertise in pressure point therapy by earning a certification credential. In order to earn a reflexology certification, the Board requires individuals to both pass a test and complete a number of hours of clinical work. With your certification in hand you can find a job with employers ranging from physicians and chiropractors to health clubs, spas, and physical therapists. In addition, many pressure point therapists operate independent practices.

Pressure Point Therapy Training

Programs in pressure point therapy are offered by schools around the country. Massage therapy schools are a common home for pressure point therapy courses. Alternative healing centers and natural health schools also typically offer courses in reflexology and pressure point therapy training programs. There are also online courses in reflexology and pressure point therapy, making it possible for you to pursue training in the area even if you don't live near a brick-and-mortar school.

Pressure Point Therapy Career Outlook

Alternative healing is a growing field. Mainstream health care providers and the general public are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of non-traditional treatments, and as they do, the demand for individuals with training in pressure point therapy is dramatically increasing. Pursuing training in reflexology and pressure point therapy can prepare you to take one of the readily available jobs in the field.
