Twins! They may not be Arnold Schwarzenegger or Danny DeVito, but they're twins alright--and you get to break the news. Through training at an ultrasound school, you will get the skills you need to perform all those exciting pre-natal exams.

What Exactly is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a form of radiology which uses high-frequency waves to generate images of the interior of the body. These images are then recorded on film or videotape for clear display.

Ultrasound workers, or sonographers, prepare these images so that physicians can diagnose patients. While these exams are used to look at many internal organs, they are mostly used for pregnancy. Doctors recommend that pregnant women get ultrasound examinations 12 weeks into their pregnancy and again at 20 weeks.

As an ultrasound technician, you have the opportunity to see a baby grow inside the womb, help protect the child, and give doctors vital information to help save lives.

Ultrasound Training

Certification is a must as a sonographer. Certification is offered by one of the following agencies:

  • The Joint Review Committee on Education for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCEDMS)
  • The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)

Courses through an accredited ultrasound program range from a one-year certificate program to a four-year bachelor's degree. In addition to learning ultrasound techniques and terminology, you will also learn many of the core sciences such as biology, chemistry, and anatomy.

While theoretical knowledge is critical, the most important aspect of being a sonographer is the human element. Sonographers must be sensitive, well spoken, and caring. Be sure that as a part of your program, you get extensive practical experience so you're ready for a rewarding and fulfilling career.
