Trained MRI Technicians Are In High Demand

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has become an indispensable tool in non-invasive diagnostic treatment of patients everywhere. Combining radio waves and magnets, the MRI scanner does not emit radiation common to x-ray imaging, yet is effective in capturing evidence of disease or injury. The technology is not simple and requires a trained MRI specialist to operate. If you're looking for a career in medicine that offers good wages and long-term job stability, schools offering MRI programs are now in session.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for MRI technicians should grow faster than most other occupations through the end of the decade. Formal training for operating MRI diagnostic equipment focuses on both the use of the scanner, as well as in the advanced radiologic science of physics and cross-sectional anatomy.

MRI Programs Focus on Certification and Training

Most schools offering MRI programs focus their coursework and laboratory training toward assisting their graduates to pass the national advanced imaging MRI certification examination. To train as an MRI technician, students will need at least a high school diploma or GED and, preferably, post-secondary schooling in science or mathematics.

Many MRI tech schools offer a year to 18-month program, leading to a certificate. You can expect training in computer technology, physics and math, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology as it applies to MRI scanning.

Often, students who are already licensed radiologic technology professionals looking to expand their careers and increase their value in the marketplace enroll in short-duration MRI training. Upon graduation and certification, you can take your place in hospitals, private clinics, and imaging labs across the country.
