Sonography involves using specialized high-frequency sound waves that are directed into the body and reflected back when they meet soft tissue, giving an image that can be recorded and examined.

This image is used as a first level diagnosis of the condition of internal organs, allowing comparison with normal healthy organs, and in the case of fetal scans, the condition and movement of fetuses in the womb.

Sonography Career Specialties

Working as a sonographer - otherwise known as an ultrasound technician - means that you are working in the area of medical diagnosis, one of the growing areas of healthcare careers. Sonography schools will provide the basic training.

As a sonographer you can specialize in particular areas of interest by deciding to pursue your sonography career in the following specialties:

  • Neurosonography: examining the brain and nervous system through sonographic techniques, reducing the risk of exploratory neurosurgery.
  • Obstetric and Gynecological Sonography: examining the female reproductive system - during pregnancy and before and after, for the diagnosis of problems of the subject and fetuses.
  • Abdominal Sonography: using ultrasound to examine the liver, intestines, kidneys and other internal organs.
